Bathroom Remodeling Tips

Add text

Remodeling your home’s bathroom is one of the best ways to increase value in the home and create a new aesthetic in the space. Kitchens and bathrooms are typically considered the two most valuable rooms in the house to remodel when looking to increase return on investment and resale value. A bathroom remodel can involve a lot of work and requires a good deal of planning and a strong budget. If you are interested in pursuing a bathroom remodeling project, there are a few important things to keep in mind for the project. Here are a few top tips for the project.

Start with a Budget

In keeping with any successful project, you have to have a budget. This is both to understand what you can afford and to keep your project within a reasonable scope. The budget will pretty much tell you everything about your project. From the types of materials and design limits to the time spent working on the project, your budget will determine the pace and vision of the remodel. Larger budgets don’t always translate to higher quality projects. More is not always better, but higher quality materials can provide a higher return value. The important takeaway is to create a budget in conjunction with your design plans and stick to it. Decide on what you want to upgrade and change, select materials, and get started.

Design a Plan & Refinish

After you create your budget, you will need to draft a detailed plan about what you want to do with the bathroom. This usually involves a layout, materials list, and specific information on the plumbing and electrical work–if necessary. If you plan on moving sinks, tubs, or toilets, your budget is going to significantly increase from the complex plumbing work involved and you will likely need to hire a professional. Often, you should leave things like toilets and sinks in place and instead opt for aesthetic fixes and refinishing of existing fixtures. Refinishing tubs, showers, sinks, walls, and tile can save you money while significantly improving the look and feel of the bathroom. You also stand to save on time and stress involving serious renovations.

Add Lighting, Ventilation, and Hardware

A great way in which to improve the bathroom space is to upgrade the ventilation, lighting, and hardware. In addition to upgrading fixtures, tile, and painting the walls, you can significantly improve the function and appeal of the space through good ventilation, lighting, and minor hardware upgrades. These items are easy to add on a smaller budget and can make a noticeable difference in your bathroom. Make sure hardware and lighting are consistent with your designs and that materials are cohesive–such as the finish on handles and showerheads. Sometimes the smaller upgrades are the most beneficial aesthetically and financially. Remember, you can always remodel in stages–starting small and working up to larger updates.
